Guanajuato

By Lizete Hernández

Volkswagen began production of the first EA211 engine at its Silao, Guanajuato plant, for which it created a complete assembly line, as well as new production facilities to manufacture monoblocks, crankshafts, cylinders, cylinder heads, and connecting rods.

The Silao plant produces 1,500 engines per day and, as of today, the EA21 will be integrated into the new Taos SUV model for the North American region with an investment of US$233.5 million to build a new production line.

Christopher Glover, Volkswagen's Vice President of Production and Logistics, recognized the teamwork of associates and collaborators in various areas such as quality, technical development, logistics, among others.

"Thank you all for your commitment and quality in the efficiency so that today this is possible. With this engine, the Silao plant consolidates its growth and sustainability for the future, for the benefit of the families of this state," he said.

He pointed out that while the production lines were being prepared for this engine's start-up, production of the new Taos vehicle model also began in Puebla, strengthening the brand's capacity and presence worldwide in the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment. This vehicle will be the fourth to be built on the MQB modular platform.

The EA211 engine will incorporate the latest technology that enhances the efficiency and performance of VW vehicles.

"This new project shows our commitment to economic recovery in Mexico, trusting in a better future and demonstrating it with new products," commented Steffen Reiche, Chairman of Volkswagen's Executive Board in Mexico.

PRODUCTION TO INCREASE IN 2021

The engine plant located in Guanajuato Puerto Interior has a capacity of 1,500 engines per day and in 2020 produced more than 225,000 units.

With this new engine, production capacity will increase by 70%, with 1,000 more units per day.

This engine will be integrated into Volkswagen models' production in the North American region starting this 2021.

"The start of this production represents the strength of certainty, the tenacity of the state of Guanajuato, and the trust that the company has provided. We want more companies to join the 61 projects that have invested during this administration," commented Mauricio Usabiaga, Secretary of Sustainable Economic Development.
